Antique high french gilded candle holder

A magnificent antique tall gilded candlestick. A real eye-catcher. Material and Technique: This type of candlestick is hand-carved from wood and finished with gold leaf or gesso. Many of these Italian pieces feature so-called *Mecca* gilding. This process involved applying silver leaf to the wood and then coating it with a gold-colored varnish or shellac. It was a more affordable yet highly atmospheric alternative to pure gold leaf. Design: The candlestick features a richly decorated, baluster-shaped stem adorned with carved acanthus leaves. The base is typically triform (three-sided) and rests on elegant scrolled feet or claw feet. Origin: Large Baroque or Neoclassical candlesticks of this type were originally used on altars in Catholic churches or monasteries. Today, they are highly sought after as decorative interior pieces or are converted into exclusive table lamps. Shows traces of old woodworm, which has been treated. There are minor blemishes, signs of wear, and imperfections—nothing significant given its age. Please see the detailed photos.
